Computer running really SLOOOOOOW
Anyone know why this could be? Its not the whole computer just the internet. Ive run my trend-micro virus protection and the 37 spyware programs it came up with all passed. Any advice?

got dial-up?
i also had this problem with IE. i switched to firefox, now i can blow the doors off of anything i access. |
Sometimes I just have that issue, as if the cable modem has just decided to go at a crawling pace. Usually just closing the browser and/or waiting a bit helps it fix itself. If not, then as stated above, maybe there's something else.

You can also look here, and find a speed test server close to your location. It's sometimes not so accurate to test from a server further away.
http://www.dslreports.com/stest?more=1 I use a server in middletown, N.Y. : http://middletown.speedtest.frontiernet.net/ It sounds like your internet connection is slow, for some reason. Fixing your pc will not help. If your bandwidth is less than you are paying for, call your provider and complain. Sam |

Mine was slow when I used things like Kazaa, etc. Also, my entire system was slow when I installed .net framework during windows xp updates. I now avoid anything with .net framework involvement.
Have you made any hardware or software changes lately? |
I unplugged my webcam... lol

try this, it usually helps my computers... (you must have XP to do this)
1 .go to MY Network Places 2. on the left, click on the View Network Connnections 3. Right Click where it says Local Area Network and has your ethernet adapter listed. 4. after you right click, click on the tab that says Repair. This usually fixes mine when it is slow. |
did that and got the following message:
The following steps of the repair operation failed: Renewing the IP address Please contact your network administrator or IP |
noone else has any ideas?
|
i thought you fixed it by unplugging your web cam.
|
lol no, I said that becuase madsam asked if i made any hardware or software changes latley.
|
format reinstall lol. that is the Dell approach on consumer systems
|
how would i go about that?

Step 1: Find 2 hours of your life that you are willing to waste away.
|
ha.. step 1:check.... whats next?
|
Backup important files/contacts/programs/etc.
Assuming you have windows XP: Locate XP disk. Locate the Windows XP Product key (25 digit). Depending on your computer, it could be on the XP CD case, or if your computer came with XP it could be on the computer tower itself. Make sure you find this first, I didn't, and was freaking out with a useless computer infront of me frantically trying to find it. It was a laptop and it was hidden on the bottom  This probably explains everything better than I ever could. http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/window...s/reformat.htm Another thing, make sure you know all of your windows passwords. I don't think the link mentions it, but it asked me for a password on all three computers I tried. It is a security measure to make sure people don't delete everything. If you haven't set a PW, then you should be able to leave the prompt blank and press enter. For some reason this didn't work on PrincessJeanie's computer, so after 2 hours of trying to hack it, I can't recall what I actually did to get around it. If you have this problem, I can try to figure out what I did. Lastly, I in no way am certain that this will help your problem. If it is a network connection problem...this may do nothing if it is a problem with your ISP, or it may fix it if it is a network setting in XP that needs to be "reset." THIS IS A LAST RESORT! Any questions...lemme know. |
oh wiat, you meant reformat...? nevermind i know how to do that
