John, I agree you have to blame the user, not the OS, I was just stating that I have heard of difficulties with Vista
In my case, I know the problem is I don't know what the h*ll I am doing.

Didn't work
when I tired
On 192.168.1.2
Click on Start, Run.
Type in \\192.168.1.3
You'll get Sam'* shared goods.

On 192.168.1.3
Click on Start, Run.
Type in \\192.168.1.2
You'll get Bob'* shared goods.
I got errors on both computers saying it couldn't find the other one.

Shutdown your firewalls, both computers, and try again.

and you are using the IP addresses of your computers right?

NAT is considered a basic firewall so YES is the answer.
