Default civic jumping in rpm'* between shifts

hey all. i think i have narrowed it down to 2 things but i wanted to ask here incase you guys have different ideas.

driving the gf'* car the past few days ive noticed if you are at less than half throttle, in other words anywhere under 45mph speedlimit, the car tends to jump a grand or 2 in rpm between shifts. if youre over half throttle, it shifts pretty normal, albeit kind of harsh. im thinking clogged catalytic converter or the torque converter is shot. i cant check the tranny fluid without a lift. the tranny just has a window on it. im thinking just put a bottle of liquid cat cleaner in the tank and see what happens. any thoughts?

thanks all.

id also like to point out, ive never driven the car before this week, and the gf cant tell me if its down on power cause she apparently doesnt know what that means :/ the reason i think its the cat is because at this point in time its getting about 18mpg doing about 60 miles highway every day and about 4 blocks of city.....

If you take it to a shop, they can blow a hole in the exhaust just ahead of the cat, and check to see if its plugged or not. If its not, they will just weld the hole shut again. It shouldn't take too long, so if shouldn't cost too much.

That could work, seems it don't sound like its real bad. I wish I had thought of that when I had the trouble. Might have saved me $324. haha

the only thing im concerned about is in the neon (bigger engine and tank) it sputtered and popped and damn near died on the highway. i knew what was going on but im afraid it might scare the gf lol. cause its gonna be worse. same amount will be concentrated into a smaller amount of gas...
