LOL. Yeah, whats the deal with the pic?!?

And come on, thats kinda lame IMO to cater to people over 350 lbs. Seriously. I mean, i'm overweight, I'm 6'2" and 280 lbs, but seriously, a normal ambulance ready to carry anyone up to 350 should be PLENTY. Spending money in a very unneeded place if you ask me.

Not a very good news article. The ambulance in the picture is from the City of Toronto. It would have been nice for them to include the correct picture given the significant differences between the two.

Sorry John, have to disagree with you on this one. The average weight is increasing at an alarming rate and our equipment simply isn't capable of dealing with some of these patients. This creates a huge risk of injury to prehospital care providers. I've gone home with a sore back a few times from lifting and moving very large patients. From a medical ethics standpoint we can't provide less or substandard care to those patients who provide us with this kind of challenge. These individuals deserve the same level of care and compassion as our other patients.

I know it'* not funny, but I just got an image of an old forklift, or one of those hydraulic platform thingies, being converted into a gurney

Yeah...funny, and not funny, all at once. I recall my wife, and five other nurses trying to move this whale in the hospital bed. They should have called for a forklift. She came home all hunched over with her back a mess. As I recall, the fool kicked the bucket anyways..congestive heart failure. So much for progressive healthcare, we gotta pay for the folks who take that "supersize" stuff a little to seriously.
