I'm with you on the amount of RAM. Some RAM does have to be paired, but typically not for laptops from what I have seen.

yeah ive caught that about processors which is why its all greek to me now.
proof for speed not being all-that: my processor is 3.2 ghz - yet for some things, my fiancees computer is faster even though her comp is below 2 ghz and we have same amt of ram.

Everyone has their own reasons for liking/not liking brands. Its the same with cars. Ive bad bad experiences with compaqs, I wouldnt get one no matter how stronly bill encouraged it. Honestly I wouldnt buy a desktop again from any major manufacturer. But one thing you can compare is hard facts like procs, ram size and speed, hdd size and speed, etc... So thats what you should be looking at mainly IMO.

My strategy was to buy a Dell B1300 1.73 Pentium M on sale for $499 and gave it all the bells and whistles and still come out at $800. It runs 24 and 7 and couldnt be happier with it.

Rigors of travel? You and I are going to have to duke it out. I have an HP NW8000 Mobile Workstation. Two hard drives (both 7200rpms), Maxed out on RAM, and I use it for VERY large complicated 3D design models. And it handles my travels VERY well.
