No offense, but the Dalmation would have been gone the first time from my house, and dead the second. Dalmations were bred to be nasty. It'* in their nature. They were used to run off stray dogs that were prone to chasing the horses pulling the fire carts. Not reall good pets (disney can be blamed for many of them). Good guard dogs, but rather unpredictable and tempermental in general. There are exceptions, but most are nut-cases.

I must have had quite the exception, my one experience with a Dalmation is that it was by far the smartest dog I've ever had. I swear he understood english.
His problem was we had been together since before I got with the wife so when we all moved in together he thought he was "2nd in command". It was a little bit of work for him to learn that the wife was now #2 and begin listening to her too.
Both times he nipped my son were when the son was trying to take a bone out of Domino'* food bowl while he was eating for which I had told him many times before not to mess with the dog while he was eating. Domino was great at all other times and you'd be amazed at how obediant he was. For example, when we all moved in togther it was in a second story apt. When Domino needed to go out he'd bring his leash over , i never taught him that - he just started doing it one day" and while we were bringing stuff upstairs he came over with the leash so I said "ok go wait on the land ing for me" ... and he did! My wife and new kids were amazed. If I could have any pet I ever had back, it would be Domino.
sorry to go off topic.

Dalmations aren't stupid by any means, but they are a little short-tempered and territorial.
They're not exactly the best for young kids. If you want another dog, that will be absolutely perfect for your kids, look into a border collie. Those herding instincts make them ideal for families.
