Bose Acoustimass 10 Surround Sound Speakers

My question is: how do you make the subwoofer powered? When I purchased these speakers, the sub was not available in the powered version. Since then they are now standard (powered) in the Acoustimass 10 Series. I'm going to assume the answer is no.

Are these for a car or home??

petraman 09-14-2006 12:47 PM

you assume correctly. but would you really want powered? I really don't notice a difference

The lack of bass bothered me so much when watching an intense movie that I went out and purchase a powered subwoofer, it was like night and day. I have 2 sets of these speakers, in different rooms and don't want to purchase a second powered sub for the other one. Also I just don't have the room or budget to have 2 subs(one powered and one non). I'd even like to eliminate the one powered that I'd purchased.

go to ebay , or crutchfiels site. You really need a mono channel amp to bring out some real bass. Aodio savings is another good site and ebay vendor with good service and prices. i bought a 350 Alpine sub amp for the car for them for $79....

you can buy mono amps for home use too.

there are TONS of models out there. If you want quality for a good price check out Niles stuff.

I could give you some top end stuff but it would be pointless with bose speakers.

GXP Venom 09-14-2006 01:23 PM

I knew it was for the home, and as mentioned both types are made, I was just referencing to show you what deals you can pick up at ebay. For 79 bucks my new alpine must have fallen off a truck

I must have a damn good amp, then :-D

Bose sells a setup with a non amplified subwoofer?

And i'm with corvettecrazy for a few reasons. 1 it's bose, it's marketed as top end stuff, but it's very far from it. Finding an amp to power it will be tricky as Bose does not reveal power requirements or outputs for speakers/amplifiers they sell for the most part.

Bose subwoofers also use very small drivers, sometimes you can't even call them subwoofers because they don't play subsonic notes. You can't get heart stopping bass out of 3 or 4" drivers like they've used in the past.

BonneMeMN 09-14-2006 01:46 PM

Are there any power handling specs, or recomendations by Bose?

Yes they did, approximatly 6 years ago. It's a 5:1 channel.

I can check the paperwork it came with and get back to you.

For the price the bose systems cost I assumed all models had powered subs. I am in the market for a home theatre system so this is good to know now.

I believe Bose realised that the Acustomass didn't have enough bass so they did introduce the newer models with the powered subs. The model I have is appoximately 6 years old and I don't believe that they sell the none powered in the 10 series. 10 meaning 5:1 with the proper amp I believe is dolby digital.

If your reciever has an A/B set of speaker outputs, then I believe you can hook up the non-powered sub to the B set of terminals. You may need a low pass crossover if the sub doesnt already have one built in.

If thats the case, then it would be much cheaper than buying an amp.

EDIT:: If you have the RCA type connector (like I do) Look on the back of your receiver to see if you have that option or where if any, a sub can be connected.

Thanks for the info BLACK94SSEi I run the speakers through the DVD player since it has a built in amp. It also has a tuner so I listen to the radio with it also. The DVD player doesn't have an A/B set of speaker outputs.
