Boosted Sunglasses

Hi all....

Here's the thing..I haven't had decent sunglasses in a while. Liked some Oakleys for a time.. but they are long gone.

I'll be making a trip across country and will need good glasses.

I'm open to suggestions.. Let's keep it to informative, price and possible picture. Please don't make it a flaming or battle.. Merely looking for suggestions on what works good out there.

I'll add...my eyes are light sensative and many times, the darker or better light filtering the more I like them.

sse1990 06-21-2006 07:43 AM

You know what, I have had expensive glasses previously. I do ALOT of driving, and I have been told by the optometrist that I have to have sun glasses on, otherwise I will get a headache. Anyhow, for the last few years, I have simply been getting those 10$ glasses you can pick up in the mall at those little booths. I don't worry if they get broken or lost since I usually keep more than one pair in the car just in case. You can easily find nice dark UV glasses. As for name brand, I don't really care what name is on them, and usually those 10$ have no name, lol.

sonoma_zr2 06-21-2006 08:11 AM

the best pair of sunglasses I have owned were Serengeti's. They don't distort color and can be worn at night. They are somewhat dated, so I picked up a pair of Oakleys. I keep them in the car in case I need them. I can send them to you to try.

when i'm waring my contacts insted of glasses I do the same thing too. i had a nive dark UV pair that i used in my Jeep when i had that and i loved em... i still ware them when out on the boat. and when i bust them up or drop them i don't have to worry about losing a pair of $150 glasses.

I agree, I had few nice pairs of Oaks but I find the 10- $20 knock offs are just as good. I find a pair I like I buy 2 0r 3 because I have a way of losing or breaking them.

My wife gets cripling migranes wich can be triggerred by driving in the bright sun and she has a pair of Panama Jacks she got at Walmart for $10 wich help greatly. They come in all shapes and sizes like the mall kiosk big name knockoffs.

Heck..you could snap a pic...

There is no difference between the lens technology in name-brand glasses when compared to the $20 cheapies.

Go with a couple pairs of 20 buck cheapies and you'll be happy.

Hey Bill, I don't know if you saw the sunglasses I had in my compartment Saturday, but they're great. I drive into the sun every day to work and these are the only sunglasses I ever have liked. I'm pretty picky about sunglasses but these look and feel good, and they are nice and dark. They're CHAPS (by Ralph Lauren) and I got them for $10 at Marshalls :D

Nope 8) I can get a picture if you want Bill. But finding these exact ones would probably be impossible anyway. Good luck.

I like Ray Ban's. I wear those quite a bit. I think I have about 6 pair of sunglasses ( not all Ray Bans) and they range in price. I am very particular on how they fit and how they stay on top of my head. Bill, my sunglasses are in my dl picture on top of my head. They told me to take them off and I said "No, that is where they'll be when I get pulled over" so they let me keep them there.

Have you tried finding a Barney pair of sunglasses??

ROFLMAO!

Now I'm worried about you Jack. :D

And, Bill. Sometimes it does make sense to get a pair with polarized lenses along with the UV protection. Highways and waterways can be brutal by creating polorized light waves reflecting off the flat surfaces. That glare takes its toll on your eyes and fatigues them.

Just something to consider. ;)

Relax, it was just so I could freak out my sister in law, but seriously I thought I would have given you reason to be worried about me a loooonng time ago

And I agree with getting polarized lenses, I've noticed how they can cut down on the glare when out on the water all day.

BillBoost37 06-21-2006 10:14 AM

Cheapies can still be had with the polarized right?

Yeah, I've bought cheapies that were polarized, somewhere around $20, give or take $5

dbeast420 06-21-2006 10:45 AM

They aren't sunglasses but,I keep a pair of Uvex Genesis in the Bonne at all times. Not only are they good for sun but handy for projects too 8)

SSE Motorhead 06-21-2006 01:51 PM

I found a pair of Panama Jacks while I was out on my dirt bike. They had amber-colored lenses and I've read that those are good for driving because they filter light in the blue wavelength (like "BluBlockers). I actually like them, but I lost those glasses when I fell out of the raft while doing rapids on the Snake River. So I went to WallyMart and got a polarized pair with a similar colored lens. I like 'em just fine for everything but driving the SSE - stupid polarized lenses eliminate the HUD reflection! That means I can't see the HUD, so I wear a pair of RayBan Wayfarers in the Bonnie.

Interestingly, my daughter did a science fair project on sunglasses a few years ago. Her goal was to determine if expensive glasses were really better than cheapies. She didn't have the equipment to verify UV blocking claims, so she concentrated on glare reduction. Her findings were varied. Polarized lenses topped the list in glare reduction, whether they were cheapies or pricey. This was the most objective test she conducted. It was easy to photograph the ability of lenses to reduce glare off a car windshield. Some of the cheap and really dark ones were just that - dark. No real glare reduction and vision seemed to be somewhat impaired because they were so dark. Other issues she considered were optical distortion and visual comfort. Some of the cheap glasses distorted vision near the edge of the lens. My Wayfarers ranked pretty high on the "visual comfort" spectrum - some of the test subjects thought their eyes felt "relaxed" while wearing them. Certainly these are subjective results, but without a lot of expensive equipment it was the best she could do.

Personally, I like the RayBans AND the Panama Jacks. If I lose my RayBans I'll be pissed and probably cry (they were only $50, but I'm a tightwad). If I back over the PJs, I'll just buy another pair.

I'll bet THAT clears things up for you, eh?

BillBoost37 06-21-2006 01:56 PM

I can now see clearly... 8)

lash 06-21-2006 02:01 PM

Ah, the HUD, lol! I forgot that, since it's essentially a reflection off your windshield, it is polarized light and therefore polarized lenses will reduce the visibility of it. That's funny to me, since I don't have HUD....

Well...many times..in bright light..the 97+ hud is not very visible. This is one of the areas where the 92-96 hud was much better...

Back to my glasses...I guess I'll start picking up cheapies tonight..

Greyhare 06-21-2006 02:18 PM

My personal preference is for classic Ray-Ban Aviators with cable temples. (Expensive)

I have had cheapies that caused more glare in bright sun than they prevented.

That being said, I am currently using some cheap Aviator knock offs that work quite well; they do however have some interesting color distortion. (Red and the yellow "School Crossing" signs really stand out.)

GXP Venom 06-21-2006 02:37 PM

Panama Jacks, at Wallyworld....$9.95 polarized-glass-lots of styles. I pick up 1 or 2 almost every trip there. I am horrible about leaving places, sitting or stepping on them. Or looking to far over my shoulder on my V-Star and have the wind rip em off my face.

Sully1742 06-21-2006 03:46 PM

Ive been using black on black Spy Microscoops for the pst year. Love them. Probably not dark enough for your liking though. I wish they were polarized. I need to get another pair of polarized for fishing.

Bill, if you want to look cool, but not drop the coin,

www.fakeoakleys.com

Imitation oaks, but I have heard very good things about them, all things considered.

NERV 06-21-2006 04:24 PM

I've got a pair of revo's i'm not sure what kind of technology they us ein makign the lense but when i have the glasses on i cant see my HUD and color LCD readout (ATMs specifically) have stranges patches of various colors

ChaseSmith 06-21-2006 04:52 PM

I wear Costa Del Mar sunglasses, currently two pairs. Blue lenses for salt water fishing, and brown lenses for regular use.

There is a difference between these and cheap polarized lenses, every pair of cheapies I've worn offshore, the salt spray has taken the coating off of the lenses. I've had mine for about 2 years now, and they are still perfect, I broke a lens once, but they replaced both for $40. They cut the HUD a little, and they turn black cars funny colors when viewed through tinted windows. When you are fishing there is nothing like them (except Ocean Waves) because you can see into the water and look at the fish while you are fighting it. They also cut a little glare off the roads.

bandit 06-21-2006 04:55 PM

I like my Walmart $20 ones... Polorised and all....

they are about 2 years old and dont even have one scratch on them...

They cut out the glare really well, and i can sell throw peoples tint and windshelds like they where clear :)... gets rid of all the glare on them. :D

SSE Motorhead 06-21-2006 05:01 PM

NERV, you probably have polarized lenses. With polarized lenses you can see tint patterns on windows, and a sort of rainbow affect when you look at sunlight reflected off transparent plastic.

You can test for polarization by putting your sunglasses on and tilting your head from side to side while looking down the road and facing the sun (so you get maximum reflection). If the road gets brighter as you tilt your head, your lenses are polarized. 8)

 That's too funny. I've run over a couple pairs after they fell off my head when I would lean out and look under my rocker panels to check the clearance under my Jeep while offroading.

big_news_1 06-22-2006 12:09 AM

Boosty, I can vouch for both the cheapies and expensive lenses.

Walgreens sells some great $10 polarized glasses that I use in the car. They were just running a 2-for-1 deal on them, but I'm not sure if they're still doing it. The glasses darken everything to a reasonable level, and the polarization really helps glare. I've cooked myself on a beach in Mexico and those glasses kept my eyes from even feeling the fatigue.

HOWEVER.... I just got an awesome pair of Serengeti's for when I'm flying. They stay in my flight bag and only come out when I'm in the plane, but they work great. Available in many frame styles, the lense to get is what they call the "Driver" lense. You can get them polarized or non-polarized, and they greatly enhance definition and clarity of objects. The president of my flight academy swears by them; in fact, he gave me this pair for free!

Long story short, go to Walgreens for good polarized cheapies, and check out Serengeti for some high-quality sunglasses.

Sale runs Sunday-Saturday, you can usually get the sale price the day before (Saturday) depending on the store. I forget if that's this week, I believe it was last though. If you need me to hook you up I can get you a B1G1 raincheck for Walgreens though :P
