OK, here'* what I've coem up with and will likely make this my final answer.
I've asked around and still get both answers from teachers, lab techs, and engs.
Just got done talking to a eng and he took out his drafting calc, about teh best you can get.
He said the anser this gives is teh correct answer. Punched it in and the calc said error.
So I return to one of my first replies. The error is not in the answer, its' in the question.
48/2*(9+3)=288
48/(2(9+3))=2
48/2(9+3)=error

And I see it as 24*12=288 It'* all in how you look at it. The questins is the error, not our answers. This is why the answers are split, also why different calcs give different answers. I finally found the one calc that did it right and called it for what it is, a error.
