FYI, a way to both sign it and ensure that they ask for ID, is to sign it and then write "Ask for ID" on the same line. I know of some people who have done that.
a credit card that isnt signed is void. whether the merchant wants to accept it or not is up to them. asking for photo ID is tricky though, bc visa wont let ask for ID if the card is signed (unless the person has compared signatures first).
i sign my cards and write CID next to it. no one asks for ID, but its really the best thing to do.
on a sidenote: i work at the jewelry counter. any time someone pays with a credit card, i ask for ID if i can. if the card is signed, i cant refuse a card unless signatures dont match. and its got to be very obvious.
