Hey everyone this looks like this website will be an incredible resource. Anyways I purchase a 1996 Bonneville Se Supercharged for $2,300 about 6 months ago and really haven't modified it yet. I has 172,000 miles on it and just a week ago the transmission went. Now the mechanic says that it is too bad to rebuild and I need to find one at a junk yard to put in it, they have been looking and they are apparently hard to find. Originally the cost would be $1,450 but now plus another core and also they needed to replace the right drive axle ($150) so the cost is going up and up along with the frustration. I have already put new tires on it ($300), and have bought the parts to do a snout supercharger rebuild ($120) (I forgot to mention that needed repair also, I believe the coupler is broken but have also bought the bearing just in case). Plus money spent on serpentine belt, new air filter, oil change, and general tune up. I just don't know if it'* worth it anymore, it seems like it is sucking all my money up and it'* really hard considering I am only 18 and just graduated high school (I pay for everything). I really want to learn more about cars and eventually be able to add some horsepower modifications, it just seems like I am doing it the hard way. If anybody has any advice please feel free to comment. Also if you have a spare 1996 bonneville trans, with transmission code 6yrw I'm interested. It'* inspiring to have found this community and it looks like there are a lot of good people here who know what they are talking about. Hopefully you guys have some input, Mike.

Sounds like youre in the same boat i was with my cars, only i never had a need to replace a tranny and mine are very easy to locate with the N/A engine.

First, these things run forever as long as they are properly maintained. never an engine failure issue unless regular matienance is not done. I learned that the hard way with my 1992 SE. timing chain broke, not fun.

heres the thing you wanna look into if youre thinking about if its worth fixing the car...
1. is it owned or a bank loan?
2. if you own it, and evvvvverything else is solid, then fix the car and find that transmission you need.
I had asked myself the same thing a few weeks back with my 2001 and i own that one and LOVE it now that it is maintained and restored. it was a project car to have and somewhat low miles. these cars willlll run forever if you want. it started with brake rotors to a presure seloniod in the transmission a week or 2 ago. ive put some $ out for my 01 and it runs great now.

see if its worth keeping or if you can get in another bonne for around the same price, check the for sale part of BC for a car that might be for sale. no one here is gonna sell a bad car im sure.
