Am new to the Bonneville club but not new to the Internet (in fact was sending e-mail before there was an Inter/Arpa/Darpanet) With the exception of an 88 Buick, all of our cars since 1978 have been Pontiacs, just never seemed to run out of interesting ones.
In early '70s held SCCA nat'l, FIA, & IMSA competition licenses & raced a B/P 'vette whose main "unfair advantage" was in the suspension and the fuel injection (have always felt that carbs were poorly controlled leaks).
Have similar opinions about boost - it belongs at 30,000 feet - & feel that street cars should run on pump (87 PON) gas. Am also a strong believer in running an engine cooler than stock, our computer cars all have 180F thermostats & revised fan maps & airflow to match.
Also tend to keep things way past their sell-by dates, we bought our 90 SE Bonne with 300 miles on it & has 123k now. Had to replace the engine at 84k because of dropped cam bearings but consider that a freak occurance - only know of two other 3800s that did it and both were '90s.
Currently have three 3800s (and a fourth "power module" on a pallet) - 88 Reatta, 90 Bonne, and 92 TranSport. Have two toys in the garage: a '70 Judge and '86 Fiero, both with bent engines and four-speeds. Judge has only premium fuel (actually it likes av-gas better) engine I have. If I ever get time have plans to modify an Offy dual quad manifold to port injection.
Was infested with Jaguars in my yout and still find a 3.8 liter engine to be just about the perfect size for street driving & long distance travel (Orlando-NOLA: 9 hours)
None of our computer cars are stock and regularly retune with scan tools and a laptop. Can blow PROMs as needed.
First experience with computers was in 1957 and haven't looked back since. Same year Augie Pabst said "There ain't no substitute for cubic inches." He was right.
Drive a different Avis car almost every week and prefer Alero 2drs with 3.4 engine (New Pontiacs have amber displays which I cannot read in daylight with sunglasses on. Never had that problem with the Bonne.)
More of my hobbies are on http://www.6007.us
ps said I didn't care for boost, never said I didn't know what to do with it.
