Hello Newbie here...What am I up against?
Hello all. Been browsing the forum the past couple days. Nice setup and nice people here.
Here'* the scoop. I'm about to pick up a 1995 SSEi this week with 84 k on the clock. Green with tan leather. Car'* in great shape, engine runs really strong, pulls VERY well, and the tranny shifts like a dream in both normal and perf. shift modes. I've done a visual inspection of the motor and found it to be in average condition, I'm assuming. Looks like I've got a slight oil leak to deal with right off the bat, not a big deal though. It appears to be coming from the valve cover gasket.
I do have some kind of rattle that happens basically whenever it feels like, at aprox 2000 rpm or so and goes away after about 2300-2500. I'm thinking the SC coupler possibly. The seller is very uneduacted in these cars apparently and told me that it'* the alternator bearing . Could this possibly be the SC coupler? Is there any way to verify this?
My other quick inquiries are, what should I do first of all in terms of preventive maintenance? I already plan on doing a full oil change, tranny filter and fluid change, check the cooling system, and do the front brakes soon. What else should I check out? I've read about flushing the SC oil or something along those lines. Is this a recommendation at 84k miles? And if needed, how hard is the coupler job and aprox. time for someone who can work on cars? And lastly, should I do the 180º T-stat right away too? Is this mod strictly for preventing the intake from cracking due to heat, or does performance get any gain from this little mod as well?
There'* probably a link or thread somewhere about all of this but I looked and seem to have missed it.
Thanks for you help in advance.
Everyone have a nice 4th of July weekend.
Gary

Welcome Gary, congrats on the SSEi
You are on the right track thus far, as expected, a full tuneup will be best for the car, plugs, wires, fluids, PCV, filters, lines, brake inspection etc.
Your supercharger is also at the point where the coupler may be going. You might want to check the supercharger fluid as well, apparently its a very smelly fluid but it has to be done.
Once you get all of those things done, the 180T stat switch will be a great idea to handle the mods you will want to do. The 180 stat really helps the NA 3800'* due to the plastic upper intake manifold, however your intake manifold is replaced with a Supercharger. The benefit of the 180 lies in the addtion of bolt on modifications.
Good luck!
