Just 60 more miles from transmission
Hi all,
I figure someone will tell me where to go (pun intended) if this is the wrong place. I have a 1974 GMC motorhome converted to aircraft carrier. I do model airplanes and this RV has been gutted and filled with planes.
The drive line is Front Wheel Drive Olds Tornado and the automatic trans is toasted! Barely made it home. It'* slipping badly and barely goes. It has fluid and I tried the mechanic in a can route to no avail. I need to get it to the guy that will rebuild it for me, but he is 60 miles away. A tow would run me about $300. Ouch!
Does anyone know of something stupid I can put in the trans to get it to go another 60 miles or so?
One way or the other, it is going tomorrow. (7-25)
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Scott

It'* a long shot, but you could try and replace the filter. Possibly clogged and starving the trans of fluid. If you can recover the fluid, reuse it. It'* chock full of clutch material that you don't want to lose.
Rebuild is in the future.

In 1961 I could remove and re-install the transmission in my 41 Chevy in 45 minutes, but today I don't have the time and I'm not set up to do that right now. I was hoping someone would say to pour in some gear oil or honey or some other crazy thing that would make it go just a bit farther. I'll see how far I get and then get it towed when it won't go any more.
Thanks though.

you said you tried the bottle, trans honey works sometimes depends whats wrong. i would say the slower you go the further it will last, that thing is a giant sail.
you should put some pics of the aircraft carrier sounds interesting.

Actually I did try something. Don't remember exactly what. The guy who had just done my brakes gave it to me.
I thought I had someone to do the repair, (at a good price) but he caved on me this morning when I called to say I was ready to take it there. I can find someone easy if I'm willing to pay $3600. And then there'* no guarantee they will come in at that price when all is said and done.
Back to square one.
