Aluminum being a higher friction material than steel, and having drums that are so extraordinarily BIG, I figured that they would stop like you dropped an anchor. Wham, right now!

No problem Brian, I took it as a compliment.
I was just saying the main problem with the older cars and there handling problems is the suspension was designed around those Bias Ply tires.
The old steering box with its 4 1/2 turns was like a bus!
If I was to have this present quick ratio box and the old bias ply tires it would keep going straight on tight turns.
When I bought this car it had the power to stay up with you guys in these hot new Bonnys, but it wouldn't turn and stop!
The top was recovered with NOS material. Most tops get removed and painted during the restoration process today.

What ratio do you have on your new steering box and were did you buy it.I have a 66 Bonneville and are also thinking about changing the ratio on the steering box. But the first I am going to do , is to put on a smaller steering wheel.The original is more like a bus steering wheel.

I'm in the process of installing a billit 13-16 veri ratio box (third on the list).

I had a 1aauto(e-bay) 12:1 constant ratio box and it wasn't right for a big car and was very poorly rebuilt. It was nice around bends but on the straight away at 70-120 mph the car had an unstable feel to it I was twitchy.
It didn't have that nice steady big Pontiac feel.
As far as wheels go I would leave the factory wheel in if its in good shape. A smaller wheel isn't going to do much and with the higher effort of the harder valved box it would hurt performance and feel.
If you want to change wheels try the Grant wood wheel its a little thick for my taste but the price is right.
I used a chineese repo 65-66 wood Pontiac wheel. Its flaking and I can't get it back off!
I'm sorry I didn't look harder. There are a lot of good American made aftermarket wheels out there.
