valve cover squirting coolant
My son has a '96 Chevy 1500 Suburban with a 5.7l that is supposed to have 120K on the engine. After he replaced a leaking hose and replaced the thermostat he noticed coolant was coming out near the corner of the valve cover underneath the AC compressor. I asked him to pour some more into the radiator and sure enough, there was a little fountain gushing up where the cover mates with the head surface. Once it stopped, I squeezed the upper radiator hose and air and coolant escaped from the same place. I checked the dipstick to see if there was coolant in the oil but it just looked like oil. I was wondering if coolant passages go that close to the surface of the cylinder head where the valve cover gasket seats and if this problem has happened to anyone else. Thanks
