Steering Rack Question
Hello ... I have a tech question ... I have a 1999 Silverado ("New Style) LT with the 5.3 engine. The steering rack has been replaced twice with rebuilts due to leaking. The current one is leaking, but honestly not much. I can't even remember the last time I added fluid to the system, and it has never gone low. Maybe every 8 months to a year ot needs a SMALL amount. But it IS leaking on both ends just slightly into the boot.
Should it actually be totally sealed? Or should I replace the boots (one is bad) and be done with it? I have to have the oil pan gasket changed and that requires getting the rack out fo the way, so if I do change it, it would be a good time to do it.
If changing ... are there good recommendations for replacements? RackDoctor has good recommendations at times; a1Auto has new ones, and Carsteering.com also has new units.
