Copied into its own thread for better visibility, and because this is a separate topic. No worries.

We had a member just yesterday solve that same issue on his Bonneville. Check your PCV valve and its housing. If you should have a spring and an O-ring, make sure they're there and not damaged.

bbdram4u,

have you had the chance to take the vehicle into your local dealership to be diagnosed? Please keep me posted if the issue has been taken care of.

Thank you,
Caron, GM Customer Service

Sounds like a diesel engine, if it is check the PCV and also make sure that the fuel regulator is not leaking because that can cause leaking deisel to ignite creating the puff of blue smoke. I hope this helps

A puff of blue oily smoke at start up after sitting over night is a sign of a bad valve seal. It'* the only way oil can leak in to the cylinder.

On the majority of the smoke on start up problems on the LS series engines ( 4.8 5.3 or 6.0 ) you will find that the drivers side valve cover is the problem. This engine does not use a pcv valve like the earlier engines. On my 2004 6.0 (406K miles) it would smoke every start up for a week and sometimes not smoke at all. It also would smoke worse at times when it was parked at odd angles. When you inspect the valve cover it will most likely appear to be okay (You can blow through it) but the channels and baffles behind the metal plate that go to the drain holes are becoming clogged allowing oil mist to puddle inside the valve cover passages. You will also find oil puddled inside the intake. It is hard to clean these passages, but it can be done. The soak type carb cleaners and compressed air work best. There is a 1/8 hole right below the pcv port on the inside of the cover that is one of the main problems. On 2008-2010 engines GM has an improved cover you can use. Hope this helps
