2001 Silverado trans temp and gas gauge
I have two problems: I don't have a temp gauge, and my gas gauge works only intermittently. Can I just order a cluster for a newer model that does have the temp gauge? It looks like the next newer model that has the temp gauge has a different display for the idiot lights and odometer. Mine just has the big square on the far left for the CEL and idiot messages, so I am not sure if the newer cluster with the idiot lights strung out across the top would work in my truck.
My gas gauge works only sometimes. It randomly reads empty and randomly ratchets up to the correct level. If the stepper motor is the culprit, I am thinking I could fix that and add the trans temp gauge by replacing the whole cluster with a rebuilt one from ebay, I think I can just tell the vendor the mileage, but I am not sure if the slightly newer cluster with the temp gauge will plug in and work in my '01.

Sounds like a bad stepper motor. I've sent a few clusters to flspeedo.com and they are great!
They often have the unit I sent them back out the door repaired before I notice the "your shipment has arrived" alert.
