Default 2001 Silverado 1500 Frame Rot

Long time stalker, first time poster. Looking for strangers opinions. Just bought this truck for not lots. Most everything else is in good shape. But there’* this “crack” in the frame on either side. Same spot on drivers side next to fuel tank.

Ok to drive this way for a while? Worth having welder a friend of a friend patch up?

Far away. It is separated.

Close up. It is separated.

Frame needs some welding.

It'* going to need grinding down to bare metal & then see what'* left.
A frame shop can recommend if it needs additional metal for strengthening.

IMO, if it got that far, time to seek another truck or another frame. God only knows what else is broken.

In some states(like NY) this will fail a safety inspection.

Thank you, strangers. Given what I paid for this thing, I'm going to drive it as is and have a buddy of a buddy see about reinforcing it. The rest of the frame seems to be in good enough shape. I live near Chicago and have seen things driving around that are much further along in the rusted to death lifecycle.

Looks like something that someone could cut away then weld in some new, depending on how thin the metal is around the cracked parts.

I'm more worried about the cracks in hidden detrimental areas. There is a reason some states will fail a vehicle like this. To keep dangerous **** off the roads.
