GM to phase out Apple CarPlay, Android Auto in EVs.
I have to say this decision by GM is a little upsetting and may be a deal breaker for me in purchasing the Equinox EV, but I am not jumping to conclusions before I know all of the facts.
I am not hung up Apple Car Play per say, but I do want to via voice commands, tell my phone what song I want played ((I have Apple + and can ask for virtually any song), I want to be able to ask my phone if I have any new text messages and if so, play them, and obviously which I am sure GM’* new system will do, answer the phone, or make a call hands free.
Does anyone know if GM’* planned infotainment change allows me to do all these things.
I was very excited about the Equinox EV and was one of the first people on my dealer’* allotment list to get one. The 3LT seemed perfect other than the large wheels. It appears that GM has chosen to alienate Apple users and also if reports are correct will charge a subscription fee to do things related to listening to music, which now are free.
GM may have lost my business and the business of thousands and if not millions of people with this decision.
I am hoping that the new system is more flexible than first reported. I really liked the Equinox EV. It would have made my Uncles and Cousins who had worked for GM happy to see me return to the fold.

I purchased a 2024 GMC Pickup with Google Built-in, only to find out 30 days later that it'* no longer built-in and I now have to pay for it! When it say'* Built-In it means it'* part of the vehicle. When it no longer functions, it'* functionality is no longer built-in as part of the vehicle and it becomes broken. GM should restore what I paid $60K for, for all it'* customers! It'* funny how Google Built-in on the 2025 models will work for the next 8 years! How about some good faith because at this point I won't purchase another GM. This was is a terrible thing to say it was "Built-in" and then it no longer was. That'* like purchasing a TV with say features like built-in 4K HDR and surround sound, you get it home and 30 days later features stop working. You can no longer claim it'* "built-in", which is what was paid for up front.
Don't get me wrong, Google Built-in is an excellent idea, based on Android Automotive, unfortunately hardly anyone has developed apps for it in the Play Store. Regardless, GM should keep it, but removing CarPlay and Android Auto is a huge mistake, I don't think ANYONE believes for one minute that "learning from GM customers and adapting to their needs" by removing those features in future models is a good idea. How do I know that? Who'* bright idea was it to remove every 12V outlet from the vehicle? GM obviously DOES NOT know how their millions of customers use their vehicles everyday. Example, I'm a FireFighter and I can no longer plug in my 12V emergency response light. What about 12V air pumps or other accessories? How about construction worker lights. USB-PD does supply that kind of current. In addition, I run my emergency response iOS apps through my CarPlay to my Infotainment display for mapping, call data and resources. Just another example of why not to get rid of CarPlay and Android Auto.
Until GM Fixes my Google Built-In so I don't have not start paying to get it back, I will make a separate post on how users can use their mobile phone "seamlessly" to get Google Built-in working again. It should be noted that once that feature just stopped working, CarPlay functionality stopped also. It took several days to get that restored and this fix will also be in the forum post.
As a side note I was going to purchase the 2025 model and Google Built-in would have continued to work for 8 years, but helping the dealership clear out the 2024'* and unbeknownst to me , I only to get stuck in the long run. Lets see if GM makes good on Google Built-in before the Class Action lawsuits begin. There is a name for this chicanery, but it could not be posted online.
