Whats the difference?
What are the differences between a THM440-T4 and a 4T60-E....like what was taken out and what was added. How does it work differently, and has anyone noticed a real difference in how they shift?

well obviously i know that the THM440T4 is not electronic and the 4T60e is...but I want to know, what is it about the transmissions that are different and is there any noticeable difference in performance such as upshifts and downshifts. Like is there a shorter delay on downshifts?
All I wanna know is, what makes the THM non electronic and what makes the electronic ones...ELECTRONIC?

I may be totally wrong, but on the Electronic transmissions there are shift solenoids that make the gears shift, and on the older hydraulic transmissions, they shift from fluid pressure? I do know that the electronic transmissions shift faster and more accurately than the older non-electronic transmissions.

Barring a kickdown cable adjustment, it would take a couple extra moments of having your foot planted before the 4T60 in the '91 SSE would kick down.

THM440-T4 also known as the 4T60 (no E).
Vacuum controlled shifts. PCM is blind to it.
4T60E. PCM controlled shifts, vacuum modulated.
4T65E. PCM controlled shifts, duty-cycle modulated by the PCM.
Vacuum controlled shifts. PCM is blind to it.

The 440-T4( 4T60 ) is a fully hydraulic unit, with the shifts being controled by a govener and various valves in the valve body directing fluid flow to the proper circuits... shift timming is controled by the Kickdown cable, shift feel is controled by the Vacume Modulator...
The 4T60-E uses 2 solenoids in an ON OFF configuration to shift into the correct gear controled by the PCM, The PCM uses the TPS'* Voltage( Load ) for the kickdown signal among fueling...
In the 65-E the line pressure is controled electronicly via the PCM..
