The very early Chevy Caprice'* back in the 1980'* had problems with camshafts wearing out due to having too soft of a steel, but that has absolutely nothing to do with the 3800. I would suggest that you stay away from people like that.

History of the 3800 engine from Wikipedia (interesting read):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buick_V6_engine

This link answers a lot of "why did they do that?" questions about the development of the 3800 engine:

If the 3800 has camshaft problems, then I'd better run out and change mine at 177K miles. The 3800 is by far one of the most popular long living motors of it'* time.

Look around the forum and how many bad camshafts do you see? I've been here 2 years and can't remember a single one. Now if he want'* to talk NA S2 upper intaks manifolds... then he'* got a weakpoint for our drivetrains.

The Dodge 3.9L v6 (like in my '93 Dakota) is the venerable 318 v8 with two cylinders chopped off. That'* likely the engine he was thinking of.

Would this include the 1979 Caprice?

The 305 (5.0 L) was used in Chevy/GMC pickups through the 1998 model year. From 99-on it was replaced with the 5.3 L V8 (or 327) as the small displacement V8.
