The best starting point for tire selection is to go to tirerack.com and go through the selection guide. (All of it)

When you have the list of suggested tires read the reviews. (Keep in mind they are written by average users not tire experts) See if Tire rack has done any testing on the tires you are looking at; they have their own test track and cars.

Gosh, someone please tell this to the guy I trusted to drive my car... He tried putting my tires at the max rated psi for cruising around town.
