Tire discussion (Nokian?)

Anyone heard of Nokian Tyre? Apparantly from Findland recently introduced in the US a few years ago. My local tire shop who I trust is highly recommending them as an all weather tire. Most of the reviews i've read say they are a great snow tire and an average summer tire.

I'm debating on a set of good snow tires and some great directional summer tires or a decent set of all weathers. I just can't seem to find a tire that will do well in the winter and hold all the power in the summer.

And of course i'm looking for the most cost effective solution (need money for more mods ;) ).

I'm dreading the coming winter with these POS RSA's and 450 ft/lb of torque :(

The Finn's are experts at winter driving so it may not be a bad choice.
You definitely need something better than the RSA's.
Go with any kind of winter tire definitely and keep it out of the ditch.

The cost of the nokians though (800.00USD) make me think about buying a cheap winter beater though ;)

They introduced Mtn Bike tires about 5 years ago in the US. One of the best downhill tires used, and used by many!

I think you'd be happy to use them, but again, $800 is a lot. A nice Pilot Sport A/S would be cheaper then that. And be a great all season tire.

Suggestion #2 QTP's all year 'round.

Dunlop SP Sport M3s are awsome snow tires!!!

SSEimatt93 11-17-2004 05:00 PM

I bought the Nokian Hakapplelttas for my Alero..AMAZING snow traction really an excellent investment, also they handle great at speeds above 70, which is rare some winter tires are terrible on the pavement.
Id reccomend them any day!

Are those studded?

Maybe that 450 ft/lb of torque is what killed those RSA's.
800.00? For that price I'd stick with a decent all season with good snow/wet traction.

  Coming from the guy who spent....how much last year on mods....

$200 per tire is cheap in my books.
My new boots cost me $1300. but they are not winter tires.

Foghorn 11-17-2004 09:35 PM

BTW...Nokian is from that famous company you know that sells cellphones

And yes I've heard very good reviews on them but would suggest a couple of alternatives;

Blizzak WS50 in 225/60/16 with steel rims is $584 from Tirerack.

https://www.tirerack.com/images/tire..._dir_ci2_l.jpg

My personal choice;

Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice in 225/60/16 is $356 for 4 from Tirerack

All the Police forces in my area use the Ultra Grip Ice tires.

Problem is I need 17 inch tires. Hard size to find good rubber for.

235/55/17

You could use 16" rims grasshopper  . If you use a 225/60/16 your speedo would read 2% fast (58.8 mph would read as 60mph) - I think this is acceptable. You could use steel rims from a 2001+ Impala as they have the 12" brakes like you do, I had these on my GP with 12" too.

If you spec out your car on Tirerack they offer you 2 16" choices - 225/60/16 and 215/60/16.

You'll be fine on 16" snows, the speedo difference is nothing to worry about and the rims will clear your brakes.

Cheers,

I have 2 sets of 17"inch rims (chrome, aluminum) and a pair of 16" for the drag rads. Kendra will kill me if I buy another set of rims to stick in the garage ;)

LOL, well I feel for you on that one...I have 2 sets of rims and tires for each of my vehicles.

Maybe you should sell a set of 17" rims and put the money towards snows. It will lower the overall cost, save on space and you'll save on mounting and balancing each year not to mention having many more choices of tires in 16".

Cheers,

Foghorn 11-17-2004 10:05 PM

If you would really prefer 17" tires then try the Michelin X-Ice, people here are over the moon on these tires;

my Hakappelletas are not studded, they were 940CAD installed...

Krazy Kyle 11-20-2004 01:09 AM

Finland = eternal winter. Go for 'em ;)

Merlin 91/97 11-20-2004 08:37 AM

Rogue,

I just my winter tires..... they are made by the same people that designed the Nokian tires. I guess a group of their best engineers left Nokian and started their own company. I forget exactly what the name is, but I'll check when I go out to the car today. I do know the PN/Model for the tires was 59A336... I got the 15in tires for my steel wheels.

They cost me $400Cdn.... and everyone says they are just as good as Nokian.

I've been out driving on mainly ice, and they seem pretty good. I haven't had a chance to test snow/slush yet.

beckstyle 11-20-2004 04:33 PM

Oh gosh, I have never driven my bonnie in the winter. Are they good in the winter? My dad might let me have his Suburban for the winter.

2000SilverBullet 11-20-2004 07:10 PM

Likewise. I would never drive mine in that salty metal wasting electrolite.

You have an extraordinating Dad who is concerned more about your wellbeing than preserving his cash.

I am at an interesting time in my life. I have finally acquired, what I think for me is the perfect blend of vehicles, the Bonne for family excursions (keeping the wife happy cause officially it's hers  ) and sleeper rice kills, the Firebird for muscular fun and the fountain of my youth, and the 4WD Jeep for backroad fun, and all weather driveability. But now my children are teenagers and wanting to take one...or two  of them from me. What to do. What to do.
The thought of buying a "Ricer" :bazooka: has crossed my mind.....my son likes the Evo....but I have no desire to support another country's economy.

I may give up the '88 Jeep after 17 years and buy another all weather vehicle. Any suggestions :?: Don't answer. It's a topic for another thread.

Merlin 91/97 11-23-2004 04:35 PM

Hey.... those tires I was talking about....

GT Radials..... Champiro WT-70

I'd did some internet research and they seem to have some good reviews.

BonneMeMN 11-23-2004 04:48 PM

Todd, if you want a set of 16" wheels i'm sure we could come to a compromise, crosslace for crosslace?

Foghorn 11-23-2004 04:57 PM

Most 16" crosslace rims will not clear 12" brakes so be sure to check first.

Cheers,

TaylorD 11-23-2004 05:55 PM

Well Todd you need to make the decision, all season tires or winters/summers. if your going to dish out 800 for the finland tire, get the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S cause you know that can handle the summer traction. If you go winters pretty much any snow tire will blow away the RSA's and worry about summer tires in the spring.

Or get some 16inchers and throw them in the garage, tell Kendra I made/told you to do it!
