Unless you are going thru Menopause, lowering the stat to 180 from 195 is always better.

The general rule of thumb is that the life of oil doubles for every 10 F drop in temp.....above 130 F.

Your engine will produce 1% more power for every 10 F drop in temp.....above 130 F.

Free power. Longer life. How can you go wrong?

It should also be noted that some members have commented that they get lower MPGs when using the 180 degree thermostat.

I only run the 195 in my 99. GM put it in there for a reason, and the PCM relies on the engine getting to that temperature to manage the engine effectively and efficiently (hence, the maximum MPGs).

Like Bill said, your bigger concern with combating the UIM and LIM gasket issue is getting rid of the DexCool. Thermostat modifications should be secondary (at best), IMO.

The 195 was used by GM for emissions purposes.

I saw no negative mileage effects in either car with the 180'*. And I still don't notice any negative effect on the Zilla with a drilled 160 in the summer on the freeway. City mileage is down, but I don't think that'* related to the thermostat. Bear in mind that car has an aftermarket PCM and a 10% underdrive water pump pulley.

I'd probably be closest, but I've never done a UIM/LIM change on an L36 before, though I have changed my gaskets on my L67

Duh....more air = more fuel = more power

more power = more pedal and visa versa

I also suggest a 180. Heck things under the hood will probably last longer (hoses, wires, etc), though this is probably negligible in real life.

Cabin heat doesn't seem to be affected
