Default Tapping a battery terminal bolt hole

I have a Lesabre with one of those GM batteries that have the cable terminal screwing into the battery.
I've found that the thread on the bolt hole has become stripped and I'm looking for solutions to fix without having to buy a new battery.

Someone suggested that I could tap out the hole and install a bigger bolt, but I'm not sure it'* safe, reliable or effective to be worth bothering with.

Does anyone have any experience with doing this? Particularly in regards to having to install a larger bolt, I don't know if GM makes larger bolts that fit into the battery cables.

You could try a Helicoil repair kit. Thing is, you would have to remove the steel insert and thread in coil.

How old is this battery anyway?

Huh, looks like the battery was made fairly close to two years ago, so I may have lucked out and I just get a free replacement. Sweet.

I took into Le schwab'* and the tech said the thread looked pretty good and it should work fine. I can buy, since he wasn't examining in a late night rainstorm forty miles from home.

Chalk one up to my inexperience, I guess. Thanks for the help.

I fixed this in the past by drilling a larger clearance hole in the wire terminal, and simply driving the next size larger bolt into the battery. The bolt will self-tap into the soft lead of the battery terminal.
