The actual GXP GP will have the 5.3 litre V8 that GM is using on the Zeta platform. In FWD format it will be good for about 290-325 HP out of the showroom. Only rumors now of the final number, but it is definate that the car is being produced. A number of mules have been out running about town in many parts of the country. Is it possible that this was one of them? Did you get a look at the tag? It may have been a "Dealer Rep" or "Maunfacturer" tag if it was a mule.
Release is slated for early 2005 as a 2006 model. There is some talk that the body the GP wears right now was designed to be transferred to the Zeta platform, giving Pontiac the choice of FWD, RWD or AWD without having a complete redesign too soon.
325 and AWD would be very, very ,very, very, very nice.

sometimes, this is evident when wheelbase lengths don't change through body styles.

That is correct, it is still the old W body with a new skin. But the Zeta is designed to handle many different wheelsbases and widths. Transferring the current skin with minor modifications to the stamping run would not only be cost efficient, but logical in the new course of GM'* production. Lacrosse (Buick) will be doing the same thing next year. This allows them to shorten time it takes from revamp to revamp. Redesign the body and then the platform in midlife.
