What brand and model scan tool is recommended for my '92 and '93, both of which are OBD1?
Snap On? Actron? OTC? AutoXray?

I'm NOT talking about a simple code reader; I want a real scan tool.

What options/adapters will I need?
How much will it cost? I'd like to get a used one, if possible.

I would think that I'd want one that offers bidirectional communication so I can not only read data from the ECM but also write data to it, e.g. tell it to trun on the coolant fans, etc.

And should I consider a model that can also support OBDII if I decide to buy a newer GM vehicle in the near future?

Please, no guessing...only comments from those who have actually used them and know what they can/cannot do.

I don't think OBDI supports bi-derectional. I might be wrong, I've never bothered to check.

I run the Actron, so does Jr. We both love it. It'll cover up to 95 with the right cable. With my 12pin cable, it would cover both of your cars. It came with that cable, and I bought the GM cartridge. Covers every car and truck up to 95.

I love it, and it was one of the cheapest I could buy.

Speaking only about the coolant fans here: The relays for those fans are accessible in the Maxifuse Relay Center under the hood (they're on the driver'* side bank of relays; I _think_ they're the outermost two), so you could certainly add your own bypass switches to those fan circuits anytime you want...

I see the AutoXray XP240 for $50 (without cable) and the Actron CP9110/9111 for $220. I would like to have a tool. Looks like the Acton has good resale value too.

Where are these available yet, and what kind of things can you read with it. Also, is it like the autotap and needs a laptop, or does it have its own screen. I am considering getting it for the TGP, and want more info about it. Thanks.

You know, I was looking on the net. There are shitloads of software and connectors available for the GM ALDL connector. I had no idea. Just do a search for GM ALDL. You may be able to get away with an old laptop, a $35 interface, and shareware.

Will the Actron scan tool retrieve Antilock codes?

Hey Will yor scan tool came with the obd2 cable? all i got was the too,l power cable, a book and a case, i bought the cartrige but it came with an obd 1 cable.

I saw the OBD-II cables for sale on www.actron.com.
