Yes, I did mean the alternator.
And no, warranty doesn't come in here. Obviously, the owner didn't have Comprehensive coverage. (so stupid! )

The other thing I'm wondering about... Why is the radiator cap missing?

Why doesn't the dealer just replaced the PCM (ECM in his words), start it up, test it and put it on ebay just with a salvage title?!?! He'd get a lot more for it.

He probably got the cars from the on-line dealer auction network out of Florida. They're most likely wash-ups from the hurricanes.

And regarding the PT Cruiser...why would it take multiple days to get the key programmed?

The clips on my airbox are rusted like that. Granted, mine is a 2001 and has spent its entire life in the "Salt Belt", but still. The alternator on the other hand is not rusted like that.

My fear would be that the PCM may or may not be the problem. Notice that the coolant bottle is completely empty as well as the missing rad cap (as others have mentioned). My bet would be that there is something VERY serious wrong inside that engine. I would be that water has found it'* way into acouple of cylinders and someone tried to restart it after the flood was over.

Typically, the dealership that originally invoiced the car would have it covered under insurance and would not try to resell the car after they collected. The car was then probably sold at auction by the insurance company and that'* how it ended up with the current seller.

I'd stay away from this one.

That car took a swim, no doubt about it. There is rust everywhere under the hood. I think it might have even gone down a river and was fished out.
