Reverse to D Shifting
I'm a little anal about this.... I really try to not be rolling when changing gears. I even make it a point of coming to a full stop, shifting to drive, wait till you feel the little tug forward and then let go of the brake.... This way I know everything'* locked up and ready.... but that'* just me.

I shift from R to D before I come to a colplete stop... I have done this to all of the cars I have driven and have yet to kill a trans...
On the Older Hydraulic transmissions the shift from R to D was almost instant.. By the time you got you had off the shifter it was already in D..
On the 4T60-E and the 65-E you should give it a couple of seconds before you mash the gas, you wabt to give the trans a chance to actually get into gear ... If you hit the gas before this happens you'll get a really nasty clunk from the trans...I'd say this is hard on the Diff and maybe the revese reaction drum... I'm not a trans guy so don't quote me on it all...
In reality you should come to a stop before shifting gears... But I never have and still dont... I just do not jump on the gas right away...lol

Backing up, I usually put it in Neutral until I'm stopped and then put it in D.
When I first got the car I put it in D too fast and got a nice clunk out of it. I learned quick to take my time.

You guys must have crazy trannies. I never waited (got a manual now..no worries about this junk
). R, back up, shift to neutral while braking, almost to a stop (crawling) into D it goes. Pause, you can feel it engage, in the throttle we go. No noises, no problems. Not sure how it could be much (if any) worse than being stopped on a hill and while transitioning from brake to gas rolling backwards and then pushing on the gas and going forward. Maybe because you are shifting. Well, then does that mean if you are driving, while moving you can't shift your car into neutral, then back into drive?

I've been told that it'* not a good idea to go from Neutral to Drive while moving. I don't know what kind of truth there really is to it. I've seen plenty of people do it before with no immediate problems...

I've heard that too. Something to do with the torque converter.... That'* why tow trucks never tow an automatic from the rear.
The basics of not going from R to D while rolling is that everything is spinning one way and you are making it stop and move the other way instantly. This puts stress and wear on items.
