I'm going to ask this please be gentle. I have a friend whose offering me a 91 ford thuderbird supercoupe for 700$ . With 73,000 miles on it. Hears the catch when I started the car, it started to smoke . He tells me that his father poured to much oil in the engine so its burning oil. He'* a long time friend so hes not trying to rip me off. He just doesn,t want the car . I'm not a big ford fan but I drove it a while with a smoke trail behind me and it ran great . Its got an upgraded exhaust and a basic sound system it has all the options a supercoupe could have except its automatic (Better for me since I'm a poor stick driver). Body and paint are in decent shape . OOp'* I just kept typing . Well anyway I was wondering should I go for it or not. I wouldn't normally ask this hear at bonneville forums but I love this forum and trust and respect all of your opinions . And hope I get a response soon.

They are maintenence nightmares. Blowing head gaskets constantly and oil issues. But for $700 what the heck. It will probably die within a year anyways so you can buy it as a fun car and keep the LSS as a daily driver. Or a winter beater? I don't know about the NA LSS but my */C'd LSS can beat a 89'- 91' supercupe or xr7 easily.
The Ford 3.8'* have been under-achiever'* since the day they were born. Ford tried to compete with the torquey V6 market, and failed, which is why they pulled out.
For that particular car, if the oil was overfilled, it probably spells BAD news for the car. But even aside from that, it'* really not a worth investment. Compare the sheer production numbers from 87 til today with the Buick V6'*, and compare that to the numbers of the Ford V6'* (3.8 or 3800). No comparison whatsoever.
Even if it wasn't smoking, it would still be a money pit. The smoke should be a signal to you that this particular specimen has it'* days numbered.
