What happened before it died? Was there whirring? Did it start to slip in some gears? Just curious...
Twice...
First time: really delayed 1-2 shift when cold, finally stopped transmitting all together when warmed up, drove fine when cold. Torque convertor is what did it in. Misc clutches were burnt and diff pin was snapped.
Second: slight shudder built to really bad shudder so I shifted manually when I knew it would shudder. Whined for about a week, finally lost lockup and slipped really bad. Again burned clutches, and TCC solenoid was shot.

93:
Missing the 1-2 shift 50% of the time, stopped locking up into OD. Ultimately, the diff and 2nd gear clutches were found shot.
95:
Currently hammering into reverse on cold starts, OD surging up 300rpms on lockup.

SSE - OEM tansmission threw check engine light. Checked code. Tach would "wobble" between 4th and 3rd upshifts. Burning out fourth. Replaced before died.
SSE - Replacement for OEM - threw code again. Under warranty so replaced.
As I know it from my experience, the Bonneville will throw a code if any component of the transmission is/has slipping/slipped. However, other Pontiacs, liked the older Grand Prix'* may not.
95 GP "Special" - Not sure but told this had the 4T60 in it. Still don't believe it did, but anyway... No sign whatsoever. Nothing. Put is into reverse and "whirrrr" away it went. Replacement for OEM was still doing fine when I sold it.
Oh yeah, WillWren'* post reminded me... when you put it in gear and it feels like you've been rear ended by a brick-truck. That'* a sign...a bad sign.

Yep, had whirring noise, had some slipping between gears, then nothing at all. All because of a sheared pin in the differential.
