Default odometer rollback?

I've noticed with my car that if I go in reverse, I can roll back my odometer. The speedometer also goes backwards. I know that this was eventually corrected, but I was just curious as to when?

I'm guessing before "Ferris Bueller'* Day Off" :P

But seriously, I had no idea that was ever true, I though it was just an urban legend. I never noticed it in my 1979 Firebird.

Never seen that movie :P

Ryan, might be worth a double check! If you take it through an empty parking lot in reverse, if you notice the speedo go backwards, your odometer might, too!

i couldn't tell you what years it changed, but if a vehicle has a speedometer CABLE, it'll roll back. if it has an electronic speedometer, it won't.
