Default My car is smokin

Today my daughter and I were going to pick up a few new Koi. I'm driving under the bridge and I'm about to make a left turn at the lights to go in by Petsmart. I'm like, somethings burning. Smells strong. I'm looking around, smells like plastic. I keep looking around for what'* burning. I glance down by my leg and see smoke. Woh, that'* not right. I do a real quick look around, no cars near by. I give it hard gas and cut across 3 lanes in the the shoulder, shut down the car and jump out. My daughters like, should I get out? Hang on. I start pulling wires, dang, that one'* hot. I run around the car and open the glove box and grab one of those little folding pliers. Run back and start cutting and threw it out on the ground. Did a quick look, jumped back in and started the car, ran the red light and turned right to get off the highway. Shut the car down again and take a much closer look.

What the heck?

So I get back home and start looking. The fuse never blew. So I got a new in line fuse. Soldered it all back up and turned the key. POP went the fuse. OK, look some more. Turns out a wire broke and was touching ground, must have been bouncing around enough to not pop the fuse, but was still able to heat up the wire. Yep, that got the heart pumping.

Wow! That had all the earmarks of going really bad, really quick! Glad you were able to get it under control quickly and identify the culprit.

That wire is from my wideband O2. I unhooked it when I changed my A pillar and didn't hook it back up. I thought I had taped everything up but I think I missed one.

I was totally calm, I just waisted no time getting off the road and shutting down the car. I also have a fire extinguisher in the car right next to the drivers seat.

Small fire extinguisher… I'll add that to the shopping list. Glad to hear that you, your daughter, and your pants are all intact and burn-free.

Good thing you knew how to handle this issue or it could have gone a much worse route.

I would suggest putting in a smaller fuse, if the wire can burn up without popping the fuse you have to big of a fuse. Better to replace a fuse because it was too small than replace a car because it was too big.
