MPG'wise, I doubt there'* gonna be much difference between using a trailer or a dolly (the difference in weight, but I doubt it'd be that much). When renting/buying either, make sure it has a braking system of it'* own if at all possible. That'll help save on the "slam" worries you mentioned.
Where in MN?? I ain't the best at making it to mini-meets, but if you're in the area of The Cities you'll be where all the action tends to be

Oh boy.. the MN'rs have already hijacked your thread.
U haul wouldn't rent until they knew what was going to be pulling the trailer and what would be on the trailer. They will not rent if the two are not capable due to liablilty.
What are you planning on pulling the dolly/trailer with?

I'm actually from Minnesota, I've been out in AZ for the last 2 years. So I'm coming home I'm from West St. Paul originally, but i'll be living in woodbury this time around... Right off of 494 and Valley Creek Road.
Bill, we'll be using the u-haul or budget truck, or penske, or whatever else we find that works, my girlfriend and I are both moving up, so she has a truckload of crap, and I can fit almost everything into my car, go figure huh?

when I checked with U-Haul, they would not rent me a 2-wheel dolly, said the Bonneville was not approved for it'* use, too big. the same was said for the vehicle trailor.
edit" they said those devices are approved for compact and midsize cars. They have a list of vehicles that they cannot use their dolly/trailors for. Bonnevilles are on that list.
