I got new magnets!
Finally, I received my order for 5 NdFeB magnets. These things are incredible. You really have to be careful how close you put them together! The only thing that worries me, is that they lose their magnet field when heated above 250*F. Will my transmission pan get that hot? That's where these suckers are going, of course.

I was beginning to wonder why we cared about Magnets....
Your tranny pan shouldn't get anywhere near that hot. Plus, the magnets, if on the ooutside, will be air cooled whenever you move the car. PS - I also put a magnet right above the drain plug of my oil pan. Probably worthless, but what the heck, right? |
If your transmission pan reached temperatures that high I would be far more concerned with the viscosity of the transmission fluid.
I assume these are "rare earth" type magnets? |
were those the ones on Ebay???????
I read the auction and started to buy some of the round ones for a winter project for winter 2005. Should be ok being on the outside. |
Those magnets are awesome. I used to have a set if them, with one being tied back by some fishing line. Looked really cool hovering there - but if you ever get a chunk of skin in between those suckers...
I beleive mine had iridium instead of iron, however. |
No, these are not from eBay. These are from http://www.wondermagnet.com/ This website is that a large group with many great electronic stuff. I paid $20 for the five. These apparently are the most powerful out there. I don't know what material they are made of, but holy shit are these suckers strong. I had them about 3" away from each other on my pants, and they just slid right to each other [slowly at first, then SMACK!] Learned to keep them seperated.
MOS: You have a drain plug? Lucky bastard. -justin |

Here's a naive question::oops: why the magents? I'm assuming just to keep your tranny clean of any metal shavings by attracting them to the magnets? I havn't really heard much about using these, someone enlighten me

Willwren was having major troubles w/ his tranny in Greenzilla and putting magnets on it helped him get a few more months out of it.
The magnets helped keep the metal chunks in the tranny pan. |
