The more I think about, the more I probably should get it for financial reasons. Not that I couldn't afford something else. My LIMIT is $13000 TOTAL financed.
Someone buy my 94!!! Is there ANYONE in or near Rochester, NH that would check this one out for me? If it passes your inspection, and carfax, I will put a deposit down this week. PM sent to handdrumman and Karl. |
Pete, lemme see if I can get out there this weekend.

Here's the CARFAX on this 2003 for $8800. I looked it over carefully, and AGAIN, some things come up. Maybe THAT'S why the price is well below BB.
Can I get some thoughts on this? I swear every car I would want more than any other has some shit on the CARFAX. Will still have to see it in person... A vehicle inspection completed by your dealer or a professional inspector is recommended. First Owner When the first owner(s) obtains a title from a Department of Motor Vehicles as proof of ownership. Inspections Many states or counties require annual or biennial emissions and/or safety inspections. Odometer readings are collected at the time of the inspection. Ownership History CARFAX defines an owner as an individual or business that possesses and uses a vehicle. Not all title transactions represent changes in ownership. To provide estimated number of owners, CARFAX proprietary technology analyzes all the events in a vehicle history. Estimated ownership is available for vehicles manufactured after 1994 and titled solely in the US including Puerto Rico. Dealers sometimes opt to take ownership of a vehicle and are required to in the following states: Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and South Dakota. Please consider this as you review a vehicle's estimated ownership history. |
Karl, Jack, and Dave, I PM'd all of you to see how close you were to this car. Jack is the closest, about 10 minutes away.
Karl, you have a 2001 and could be helpful too. Maybe you can meet up there with Jack on Saturday? Or even both go down there at different times so I can get both your takes on the car separately? Don't go completely out of your way for me. If it's possible and you don't mind, I'd really appreciate it. |
Pete..in your PM and above you swear about all cars you look at having something messed up.
What does the carfax tell you? Maybe someone's kid broke a headlight and it was looked at by a reputable shop that shows up on carfax. I would be happy about that. It means that whatever was damaged..you know it was fixed by a shop that knows their business and documents repairs. The electrical.. that's a dealer service etc.. if it was looked at..it was probably fixed. Think of it this way.. maybe fuse 19 was fixed because the car was stalling. That would be an electrical service in my book. Personally..I'd be worried more about paint blemishes and hood herpes. |
Very good points Bill, and these 'issues' I see on carfax are not deal-breakers. I do realize theses "red flags" can be minor. I just have found it frustrating that the top 3 cars I've found have had an accident (or possible accident) in the Carfax report. A completely clean record, one-owner car would make me feel a bit better that's all. I've found two of those, unfortunately both are more expensive than what I really want right now.
Big thanks to EVERYONE'S comments in this thread, and those that have looked at cars for me, or are going to look at cars for me in the future. Many comments have been extremely helpful to me while I figure out what is best for me right now. |
If its well below KBB there is something wrong IMO. ESPECIALLY if it tells you on carfax that its been in an accident. You get what you paid for, think about if you sell it the buyer is going to do the exact same thing you are doing now, unless they are just plain dumb(and their out there). Myself I have to have a completely clean title and all my cars have that. :D I wont even look at it if it doesnt.

KBB on an '03 SSEi with 103,000 miles in excellent is $13,700. This is $8800.
Yes, the price alone being so low worries me too. The fact that it is so affordable is nice though. I plan on keeping this for good too, and if I sell the 94 I could pay this car off a lot quicker. If this turned out to be a reliable car, I wouldn't have to worry about having to sell it. If this car looks great and drives great in person, I may go for it for financial reasons. I'm going to look it over with a fine-tooth comb though. A clean title does look better! I KNOW people have not bought my Sebring ONLY because it was a rental car for 6 months. EDIT: Keep in mind, though this 2003 is "valued" at $13,700 in excellent, it has 103,000 miles. Every other 2003 I have found has 45,000 to 50,000 miles, and is selling for $12,999-$14,999. It would be impossibe for someone to price a 103,000 mile car at $14,000 when a 47,000 mile car 50 miles away is $13,000. Maybe the low price could be based on that fact. ? |
You may be right. Rentals could be a good thing too. Most rental places actually are very merticulous about servicing there cars. Then again the hundreds of people that have drove them can be a little nerve racking.
|
Another thing to consider..while these cars KBB value is X.. around here there are so many and no demand. Price changes considerably when the dealer has a Bonneville and everyone wants a Lexus.
Personally.. I put less faith in Carfax than I do my own observations about a car. Look at my 97.. price was good, Carfax is one owner..completely clean, title is clean. Someone please tell me why the heck there were connectors in the drives door that were unhooded and zip tied where they never should have been. Also..the badge on teh drivers door is too high. No sticker on the drivers door. Clearly the car was in an accident, unreported. Mickey Mouse and Goofy got together and put it back together. My point..if it hit carfax.. look it over and most likely it was fixed properly. |
