How to smoke a belt and pulley in under 10 seconds
Waiting on Mortehl to fess up with pics.
Story is this: his water pump needed to be done. He cruised up to use the garage. I had other things to do, he learned more w/o me there than by having me there to help out.
1995 SSEi is the car, between the water pump and power steering pump is a double idler pulley (one in back of the other). Things didn't seem right, he took the extra intiative (after prompting) and thought he had it on properly.
Started car, and I heard the squeal and saw smoke instantly. The conversation:
Me: SHUT IT DOWN!!!
Him: huh
Me: SHUT IT OFF!!!
Him: whhhhhhhh?
Smoke is now visible throughout the garage
Me: SHUT IT DOWN
Him: uh??
Me: TURN IT OFF NOW!!!!!!!!
Him seeing smoke now: ok
We got a new pulley, the old was was history. His brand new belt was also history. Ended up tossing on the old, one rib already shredded off it belt. (Advance doesn't stock them since I sold the car???)
In the end we got it back together correctly and he learned many lessons about being under the hood. The one that will stick with him the longest is to ensure and double check everything was done properly.....the resulting smoke is never a good sign.
Now...on with the cool part...let'* actually list the proper sequence of bolt, spacers and pulleys from the manual in case others ever need it.

I did learn a sick amount on my own, though I know I was a total pain in his *** along the way. I'm far more confident that the next time I need to tackle something like this there'* a good chance I won't be making such huge mistakes.
The idle pulleys needed to be yanked to get the accessory bracket off. When it came off, the parts slipped off the screw and I lost the order and forgot about it until it was time to put the car back together.
When I tossed them on in what I "thought" was the right order, I noticed the inner pulley was locking so I left the bolt slightly loose. When I mentioned it to Bill, he told me that was wrong. I looked through the FSMs but I could find NO place in the manual that described the proper order for the spacers. After experimenting I found what I "thought" was the right order and put everything back on. So.. I had the fun experience of putting belts on the engine for the first time.... After watching me struggle for about 10 minutes, Bill gave me some basic advice about the right way to go about putting the belts on which I followed.
So.. I filled up and bled the air out of the radiator and block and the time had come to start the girl up. By this point I was really exhausted. I started the car and I couldn't HEAR Bill because I was sitting in the car. Anywho he runs over and says "SHUT THE F#$%#$% CAR OFF NOW!" Which obviously I did. Apparently the outer pulley just locked and the belt melted it.
Anywho, there'* the resulting pulley. I'm going to try and stick with the old belt until I put a smaller supercharger pulley on, then I'm going to go gatorback.
