But now I think I'll just pack it back in the box and claim it was shipping damage.

I 2nd the ULINE products, we use their products to ship peices & parts we make in the shop at work.

I think $35 is super cheap for 71lb box like that. A replacement spindle for one of the CNCs at work came in a box like that and weighted 100lbs and shiping was well over $500 coming from the New England area.
