Did he at least drop the oil out of it? If so that 3100 might still be salvageable, which would ultimately be the most cost effective way for you to make this car functional.
But if its still got the oil in it, each day that goes by is making it less likely to be salvageable.

Yea, you should just need the motor, PCM, wiring harness, and engine mount from a regal to make the swap since the regal had the motor. The 96 regal even got the L36.
As for parts, depending on where you were they could be expensive. Here, I could get the parts from a super cheap yard for under $350, but the motor condition is not always known, and even if it is, there are no guarentees that something isn't hiding.
With that said, the normal price vould be around $500 for just the motor alone, granted it *usually* gets you a decent motor to start with.
And while I could get most of the parts for you from here and ship them (Minus motor) you'd be paying a lot for my time to remove them (mounts and wiring don't just come out on their own)
I would say to keep it under $500, throw the money into a new 3.1 and be done.But don't expect to be making a huge profit. When dealing in sub $1000 cars, usually the only major profit that is made is if something small causes the issue that looks larger and you can correct it easily. A motor is not little.
