I don't understand why it is so hard for people to take 20 minutes to clean the car up a little before posting pics. When I see an engine that dirty, it makes me wonder how well the car was maintained, whereas if it were clean I would think the car was pretty well maintained...

I'm sure there are plenty you haven't seen. And if you've seen more then I think you have, and look all day, well you need help.

I actually prefer a dirty/dusty engine when shopping for a car. It doesn't lead me to believe that the seller is trying to hide something by cleaning EVERYTHING off (leaky gaskets, seals, etc.).

High concentrations of dust in an area is brought on by moisture. So, I always want to know where that moisture is coming from. If the seller blows it all off with a power washer, there'* no hope.

I'm on that one. Very few people care much about their cars on the underside.

Being in the forum it is natural for us to clean and care and always have things looking nice. I picked up my car and got the mechanics report "possible oil pan leak, possible transmission leak" It was so wet no one could possibly tell. I cleaned it up and now I see that I need to look closer. Possible back valve cover and oil pan gasket. But the tranny is super dry.

Also the dirty car allows you to see what was done last. Just look for the fewest layers of dirt.
