I am really, really sorry to see this. I absolutley HATE when this happens.
A related tale: I drove my husband'* new truck to work one day, and a supplier of ours here at work backed his van right into the pickup, hard enought to rock it, and then he drove off! Luckily 3 other people and myself saw it and called the suppliers office, and after dicking me around for a week, I threatened legal action unless they reported it to their insurance and got it taken care of. They caused over $700 worth of damage!!! People that do this are the biggest asshats in the world.
If I where you, I'd at least get the bumper repainted. Pay your deductible and use insurance. Thats why people have it. If you leave it, it will flake and get worse, and good luck getting a decent price if you are ever to sell it!
Dont leave your car with a black eye!

My condolences. Personally, I would get an estimate before you turn it in to your insurance. Some garages will give you a break if you're paying out of pocket. Or, they may "inflate" the price to help cover your deductabe.
I dont know about NY, but here it WILL go against you as a claim regardless if it wasn't your fault. Unless, they can get the money form the other driver, it counts against how much they had to pay out. Some states may be different than others.

Yeah, same thing happened to my Toyota about a year ago. Insurance paid for it but it did go on my claims even though they said that it wouldn't. I didn't have the $1200 to fix it though and my car was only worth a little more than that. I went to the insurance claims adjuster and they just wrote me a check minus the deductable and then I found a shop and told them I was paying cash so I got a better deal.
I had this happen to my 94SSEi, ditz took the mirror clear off and dented the door. Luckily she came back, couldnt afford to fixed it properly, so I had to "settle"
