Default Hey guys, back from the middle east....FINALLY!

Ah, its SO GOOD to be back in the states again! I can definetly live without 120+ degree weather from now on. Now that I'm home, I just found out that my whole Security Police Squadron (well, most of them) has been deployed to Louisiana to assist with supplementing the local cops and keeping people out of New Orleans....which has left our base here at home without too many cops. I'm volunteering to work out at the base full time as a SP augmentee, which means active duty orders again, but at least I can just drive to the base every day and stay at home with my wife...that will be nice, and it pays well. Anyway, just a couple of dumb dumb questions, since i've been mulling over weather or not to get an SSEi or a GP GTP (hey, no flames now, it'* still pontiac! )

Obviously, supercharged engines produce higher compression, but with gas prices the way they are, 93 octane is going to KILL me. Although I don't really mind becasue the cars are awesome. Will running 89 octane mid-grade mess things up, or is it ok to do every now and then, if I add a little octane booster? A friend of mine just gave me like 6 bottles of STP octane booster for free, I just don't know how reliable it would be...any thoughts ot comments on how well octane boosters actually work? Thanks all.

I'd prolly go with the 'i' for the fun factor... the extra 20 cents per gallon will likely always be a difference of 20 cents a gallon, no matter how much gas goes up to. so if you run your car bone dry, and need 18 gallons of gas, you're talking less than 4 dollars a tank to drive the 'i'.

that'* how I look at it anyway. insurance is another matter...

Gas prices are coming down. Most SSEi'* are capable of 30mpg highway. And STP Octane booster will raise your octane 0.1 (that'* one point), not 1 full octane per BOTTLE. So you can see it'* cheaper to buy 92 or 93 octane by a LONG shot.

If you keep the stock pulley, and keep your foot out of it (good luck), mid-grade may not be a problem.

I have 2 L67'*, and don't mind the fuel prices one bit.

Thank you all for the nice comments - believe it or not, with all the negativity surrounding Pres Bush and the war on terrorism, it'* nice to actually hear people give us praise for what we do. For all the naysayers, I look at it this way: You can talk all the sh*t you want, thanks to the US Military providing the blanket of freedom you sleep under each and every night. Go try it in Iraq, and you'll wake up with your head being cut off by some religious zelot with a bowie knife. I've seen some of those videos, and it makes my stomach turn to think that there is a culture out there primitive enough to think that kind of thing is ok...but the reality hits you soon after watching it: there is, and they want every single one of us dead, military or not. We are truely blessed to live where we live, and I'm proud of what I do. Really, it means alot to me personally when I hear/read the nice things that people say, see flags in windows, or have poeple come up to me to shake my hand when I'm in uniform and just say "thanks for what you do". So, Thank you all again. Y'all rock!

As for the octane booster, yeah, thats about what I figured. Mkaake, you kinda put that into an intersting perspective...looking at it that way, I guess $4 extra a pop to fill the tank isnt a huge deal to me....perhaps I'm just being frugal due to the fact that my first child (a girl...a little daddy'* girl ) will be born December 1st....which leads to a whole mess of monetary issues, as I'm sure any of you who have kids realize. But regardless, a Supercharged L67 is in my future for sure . I have some powertrain questions too, but I'll start a new post for that.

Go with the SSei....pay the extra $4 per tank...I did an analysis with my last car (92 Caddy w/ a 4.3 L) - it actually cost me LESS money to run the 93 octane than it did the low and mid grade - got better mileage, went more miles, filled up less...so it may seem like you're having to pay more...but you get more for your buck.

Of course...that'* under "drive like an old lady" conditions....

Welcome back! Nice to meet you! You have more supporters than you do the negative ones...negativity gains the media'* attention more, that'* all. I can't even thank you enough for doing what you guys/gals do....

Yeah, thats what my wife is saying too. Thats the way I'm leaning, but we'll see what comes along. I have to sell my Honda first, so hopefully next month I will have gotten rid of it and gotten behind the wheel of something supercharged (with damn near 100 more horsepower, too!)
