Check where the lines come out of the gas sending unit, where I found one that had me puzzled for months.

No it wouldnt. Puts a strong smell of gas near the rear though. Know what code thrown?. Check lines to vapor evacuation. That may throw a fault code.

The sending unit has the main, vent, and return lines coming out/going in to the tank.

Did you top your tank off? I'm willing to bet you over filled the tank and gas got in to your evap canister. It will take a while to dry out.
