Call them and find out. If they have cash, its not a scam.

The first phone number doesn't match his name, and the second isn't listed, which is odd for a business phone.

It may be a bit overkill, but it you are really worried about it, you could call from a payphone so they don't get your number

i called him up, and he bought it an hour later... so i guess i was just suspicious. he actually had an interesting story about how the cops totalled his car.

he was right out in front of his church, going through a green light and a cop came flying through the red light with his lights flashing, but no sirens apparently. He got hit somewhere in the front quarter and spun around, took out a sign or something in the church yard. he ran over to make sure the cop was ok, and he gave him a failure to yield ticket!
the cop said that he pressed the button, and the white lights were flashing (forget what that is called) but according to the witnesses, he had a green light and no lights when he entered the intersection. he has a court date tomorrow to try to get out of the ticket.

If the laws are similar there, as they are here...he could very well get out of the ticket. When running "emergency", both lights and siren are required, and they are still to use "due caution" before proceeding. He'd probably have a good chance of winning a civil lawsuit.
