The bushings at the top of the strut on the front. How much do these really help your handling?

The black rubber bushings? Mine were in pristine condition when I changed my struts. I left them. Car handles great. They're mostly compressed after torquing the strut bolt anyway.

I cleaned them though. And if you see any major cracks, do the obvious.

Probably only if they're completely split. I can't see even cracking being a problem. They're more for unsulating the car from road vibration and noise than anything. Just a damper.
