Discrepancy with Carfax
Has anyone here gotten information from Carfax that wasn't really accurate? My wife and I are looking at an 04 GP at a local dealer. We're interested in the car, but Carfax is reporting it as a local car that was listed as a fleet vehicle. The sales rep is someone I've know for a long time and he'* a straight shooter, good guy, that I've bought from before... not a sleeze ball. I called him after finding out about the fleet registration and he understood my not wanting to purchase. He called me back after pulling a Carfax on it himself and said that car was originally sold to another sales rep'* relative and not to a business.
I'm gonna ask him to see if they still have paperwork on the original sale, but WTF? Has anyone see this kind of thing before? If my buddy is telling (or being told) the truth how could that reg get listed as a fleet?

It would do well to remember that Carfax, like any other information clearing house, is only as accurate as the information they get.
It'* also, not too difficult to launder title information, from what I've heard.

carfax is definitely not 100% accurate. it says my blazer was only in 2 accidents, when really it was in 3 or 4 and it gurantees that it was never totalled even tho im about 99% certain it was totalled in the first accident, so who knows...

Also depends what the people do for a living. If you have a delivery company, and already have a "fleet" of vehicles, then you buy yourself a personal car, but register it as one of the "fleet" vehicles for say insurance, legal, repair, etc reason, it could show up as fleet. All depends what the person who bought it did.
Plus I heard some insurances consider that it you have like 3 or more cars that you need to get fleet insurance, so I am not sure if this gets factored in or not.

He'* still a salesman. and they don't make a pay check without a sale.

I did a carfax on my 2000 Ranger that I bought new in 2000. It has little info listed. One date listed has incorrect mileage and the last reported mileage is well over 40K off. Plus we had 2 major accidents and neither is listed. I think the only thing it is really good for is listing a history of owners.
