I've used the split quick boot in the past on a couple of vehicles where they didn't want to spend the money for a new axle. They lasted at least a couple of years. They and the CV joints were still ok when the vehicles were sold.

my inner boot is torn about halfway around. has been since i bought the car in the fall of 04. doesn't make any noise, still seems to be good as new. over 30K since i bought it.

Wheel shouldn't break off. If the axle got worse..the typical failure would be for the axle to break... which would make it so your car wouldn't move because all the power would go to broken axle
