Default Considering Parting out my 2000 SE

It has 196,000 miles and I finally got a large hole in my frame from the salt and snow from Pennsylvania. I bought it 4 years ago with 128,000 miles and I am getting a quote from the local junk yard to see whether it'* worth parting out or not.

I am trying to decide if it'* worth parting out, so I am providing a list of all things I have bought for it in the past 4 years.

Feb-11 $500 Front Loaded Strut Assemblies
Jan-11 $165 Battery
Oct-10 $120 4 Steel Rims
Oct-10 $500 4 Firestone Winterforce Tires
Oct-10 $45 Evaporative Purge Valve
Sep-10 $310 Fuel Pump
Sep-10 $18 Fuel Sending Unit Gasket
Sep-10 $30 Fuel Pump Pressure Sensor
Sep-10 $15 Fuel Filter
Sep-10 $15 Fuel Cap
Aug-10 $93 Driver'* side CV Axle
Aug-10 $95 AC Delco Ceramic Brake Pads
Aug-10 $450 4 Fuzion Hri Tires
Jul-10 $40 Fuel Filler Neck
Jun-10 $18 Muffler Hanger
Apr-10 $348 Both Front Wheel bearings
Nov-09 $45 Front Passenger Caliper
Oct-09 $120 Rotors
Oct-09 $5 PCV Valve
Oct-09 $20 Serpentine Belt
Sep-09 $35 Driver side Rear Trailing Arm
May-09 $30 Transmission Pan Filter
May-09 $5 Fuel Injector O-rings
Mar-09 $80 Engine Mount
Mar-09 $80 Rear Shocks
Mar-09 $50 K & N Air Filter
Feb-09 $120 Upper Intake Manifold
Feb-09 $50 Spark Plugs
Feb-09 $20 Spark Plug Wires
Jan-09 $85 Instrument Cluster
Nov-08 $30 Lower Intake Manifold
Nov-08 $60 Lower Intake Manifold Gasket
Nov-08 $30 MAP Sensor
Nov-08 $15 Coolant Elbows
Oct-08 $35 Rear Sway Bar
Oct-08 $48 Endlinks All 4
Jun-08 $35 Throttle Position Sensor
Jun-08 $60 MAF Sensor
Jan-08 $60 Lower Intake Manifold Gasket
Jan-08 $5 180* Thermostat

In total, over 4 years I spent $3,955 on a car I paid $6,000 for in 2007.

Feel free to give advice/ideas as to whether it might be worth parting out on the forum, on craigslist/etc.

If you have the means to pull the parts, and the space to store the parts you can make out good parting it and then scrapping the rest. Parting it out will take time. Figure several days to strip it, and months, if not a year to find a home for all the parts. If you don't have the room to store big parts, then grab the small bits like sensors, throttle body, etc.

Like Dan said, if you have the time and space to store the parts then it would be a good idea to part it out. At least sell the winter rims/tires and factory rims/tires from the car if you would take it to the junk yard. That could bring you almost $500 - $1000 right there and would be easy to sell.

On a side not as for all of these:

Jan-11 $165 Battery
Oct-10 $120 4 Steel Rims
Oct-10 $500 4 Firestone Winterforce Tires
Sep-10 $15 Fuel Filter
Aug-10 $450 4 Fuzion Hri Tires
Oct-09 $120 Rotors
May-09 $30 Transmission Pan Filter
Mar-09 $50 K & N Air Filter

$1450

I would consider that stuff listed above normal maintenance costs on any vehicle so I'd say for a 195k mile car $2500 in repairs over 4 years is not too bad at all.

Sucks that the car has seen the end of it'* life though. I definitely do not miss the salt back in MN that destroys vehicles over the years and know how much it sucks for you guys.

It has definitely got me thinking that when living where they salt the roads and buying a used car , It might be worth spending an extra $500 on a plane ticket and fuel for the drive home to get a car from down south that is rust free.

I picked up a 1999 Silverado with 115k miles for my dad this fall from down here. He said he sees more rust on 2009 Silverados when he is doing paint work on them...plus 4x4 trucks don't cost any more than 2wd drive trucks down here being 4wd is not needed so you can get some great deals...just something to consider for any of you truck buying guys!
